IMPORTANT UPDATE - Changes to Transfer Station Hours of Operation

Dear Residents:

The Board of Selectmen, Town Manager, department heads and other local officials are committed to identifying ways to minimize or reduce Town spending while at the same time sustaining the quality of municipal services offered to our residents and visitors.

At its regular bi-monthly business meeting this week, the Board of Selectmen and Town Manager discussed the Transfer Station hours of operation. During this discussion, the Town Manager presented a recommendation – supported by the Director of Public Works – to close the Transfer Station on Thursdays and Fridays while at the same time expanding the hours of operation on Sundays (8:00AM-4:00PM as opposed to the current 12:00-4:00 PM Sunday schedule) during the summer months. It was explained that, given that the Town offers residents and businesses a “curbside” solid waste and recycling service, the Transfer Station hours of operation could be sensibly adjusted in the interest of both reducing associated operating costs and providing residents with additional incentive to dispose of their waste and recyclables via the curbside collection program. It should be noted that, per the Town’s current contract with Casella, the cost of hauling solid waste from the curb is less than it is to haul from the Transfer Station.

The Board of Selectmen expressed support for the proposal to eliminate the hours of operation on Thursdays and Fridays. After additional deliberation, it was decided that Sunday hours would be offered throughout the entire year (as opposed to simply the summer months). If over the next six months resident usage of the Transfer Station on Sundays proves to be relatively low, additional modifications will be considered to further reduce operating costs. At the conclusion of the discussion, the Board voted to set the Transfer Station hours as follows:

Monday:                 Closed

Tuesday:                Closed

Wednesday:      11:00AM-6:00PM

Thursday:               Closed

Friday:                 Closed

Saturday:               8:00AM-4:00PM

Sunday:                 8:00AM-4:00PM 

These changes will be effective January 1, 2018.
