Town Manager Update - January 17, 2014
Greetings ,

Let me start by offering everyone a Happy New Year, it has been a while since my last update and there is plenty to report and share.
I would like to publicly recognize and thank our Public Works Department for the great work they have done in the last month.  The roads have been wonderful and safe for travel almost immediately after each storm.

We do have winter sand available, for residential use, at the DPW facility.  I would ask that residents not take sand from the large sand pile for safety reasons.  If the residential sand pile is gone, do not hesitate to contact the Town and we will replenish the supply ASAP.

We have a primary election for the vacant Executive Counselor seat on Tuesday January 21st.  Voting will occur at Whitney Hall from 8am to 7pm.  The booths will be located in the Town Office Conference Room.
January 22nd marks the opening of filing for candidacy for local public office; January 31st is the last day to declare your candidacy.

The Selectboard will be meeting on January 22nd next week to accommodate the election and meeting schedules.  The Budget Committee is meeting on January 23rd to review what will hopefully be the final budget that is presented at the Budget hearing in February and voted on at Town Meeting in March.  Our goal with the budget was to keep any increase in line with inflation, or no more than 2%. I will post on our website the budget for anyone interested in some light reading.

The skating rink at Huse Park is installed and at the moment frozen.  Will Shoemaker and Norman Ruel did a great job setting it up again this year.  We ask that you be patient with us when the weather is warmer and the ice starts to soften.  Anyone interested in helping maintain the ice during the weekends should contact my office and we can arrange a time.

The Community Building has received some attention during the holidays.  The floors were sanded and refinished.  The floors are brighter than before, but will darken with age.  Four coats of a satin finish were applied to the floors.  The new finish is made specifically for floors that have heavy traffic and should last for several years.  The Selectboard has identified the acoustics of the building as the next major improvement area.  I have been meeting with sound engineers and we should have a plan for fixing the issues later this spring.

I will close with a couple reminders; the Town Offices are closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.   Next week is a trash/recycling pick-up week and there are no changes to the schedule.   We have a full slate of meetings next week with Recreation on Tuesday night, Selectboard on Wednesday Night, Heritage Commission on late Thursday afternoon and Budget Committee on Thursday night.  Have a great week.
