Town Manager’s Update March 29, 2013
Have we turned the corner on Winter? Hopefully, yes. Don’t get me wrong, I am from Syracuse NY – the snowiest city in the US – I love snow, but there comes a time every year when enough is enough. A few more flakes will suffice, but please no more storms. These mini-storms place a crimp in our DPW activities. Just when we are ready to put the plows and sanders away and get our rakes and graders out, another blast of winter comes our way.
This past week has been focused on completing annual employee performance evaluations. I have included a link to the form for your review. (EvaluationForm.pdf) I have been using a version of this form for quite some time. It is a hybrid of several forms from the various places I have worked. I am blessed here in Enfield to have an experienced motivated staff that consistently does good work. That does not mean the annual evaluations are any easier to produce. This should still be a time when we reflect on how we are performing, and to develop meaningful
achievable goals for the upcoming year. The challenge is not to evaluate what is on our desk or daily task sheet, but to put some deep thought into how we do what we do; is there a better way to collect taxes, or plow snow, or run a Selectboard meeting, or fight crime. It is always easier to continue on with the routine and the familiar, evaluation time forces us to look a little deeper and possibly find another way.
Thanks and have a happy Easter and a great week.
