Town Manager’s Update                                                                                              March 22, 2013

First off, thanks to everyone that participated in Town Meeting last week.  We had close to 1,200 voters on Tuesday and over 150 at the Saturday meeting.  The Tuesday total was over what we had expected, as we only had 1,000 printed ballots.  We had to photo-copy, and hand count the rest.  The results were interesting, we had over 50 different people receive votes for our Zoning Board of Adjustment positions.  Ken May and Ed Scovner were the  top vote getters and have accepted the positions.  Both Zoning Ordinance proposals were approved, which means that future development along Rt. 4 will now have to comply with our new form-based concepts.  Essentially property owners can do more with their property as long as it meets our form requirements.

Saturday’s results were positive and establish what I think is a path towards real fiscal and budgetary discipline.  Town Meeting once again approved our operational  budget, and all of the CIP related articles.   The end result of these approvals means that our town tax rate only increases 12 cents.  We have a lot of work to accomplish in 2013, now that we have Town Meeting approval, including, a major repair of Jones Hill Rd, construction of a new Salt/Sand Shed at the Public Works complex, and many deferred maintenance projects.  We will be doing work at Whitney Hall – repairing the front porch and roof, Fast Squad Building – repairing structural issues, Community Building – refinishing floor and installing a new HVAC system, Rt. 4A Boat Ramp – engineering and repairing the ramp, along with a series of other minor projects.  I will be going into more detail as each of these projects gets closer to breaking ground.

Finally I would like to thank all of the Town Meeting staff and volunteers that help with every little detail that goes into making this part of the year so rewarding.  Thanks to the Town Staff for set up and break down at two different locations, Thanks the election folks, our Supervisors of the Checklist, and Ballot Clerks, thanks to the Selectboard and Town Moderators.  One big thanks to the Lionesses for providing the much needed snacks and refreshments at our Saturday meeting, I can never get enough of those egg and olive sandwiches.

Thanks and have a great week.
