“A Shoreland Homeowner’s Guide to Stormwater Management” The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services has released a new document to assist landowners entitled A Shoreland Homeowner’s Guide to Stormwater Management. If you are a shoreland homeowner, your property may produce stormwater runoff that directly impacts the quality of our waters. The A Shoreland Homeowner’s Guide to Stormwater Management provides several simple and cost effective practices shoreland homeowners can use to reduce and prevent polluted stormwater runoff from roofs, patios, lawns and driveways. These practices can be used to meet the provisions of the Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act (CSPA), which helps protect the state’s surface waters by placing limits on development that contribute to stormwater runoff. The guide also includes general information about what state environmental permits, if any, are necessary for incorporating these practices. The guide consists of an introductory document and nine guidance sheets for the installation of: dripline trenches, drywells, new infiltration steps, retrofit infiltration steps, infiltration trenches, paths and walkways, rain barrels, rain gardens and water bars. A copy of the guide can be found online at http://des.nh.gov/organization/commissioner/pip/publications/wd/documents/nhdes-wd-10-8.pdf The guide was prepared by the DES Shoreland Protection Program and the DES Lakes Management and Protection Program in partnership with the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission. Funding for the guide was provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act under Section 604(b) of the Clean Water Act. The guidance sheets contained in the guide were provided by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. For more information on A Shoreland Homeowner’s Guide to Stormwater Management, please contact Laura Weit-Marcum at 603 271-8811. Posted 5/26/2010 |

Effective January 1, 2008, RSA 149-M:58 bans the disposal of all products containing intentionally-added mercury in landfills, transfer stations and incinerators, regardless of the amount of mercury they contain. Homeowners and businesses alike are affected by the ban on such items as thermometers, thermostats, electrical switches, mercury button cell batteries and fluorescent light bulbs, including compact fluorescent bulbs. Because mercury is a highly toxic chemical that does not break down, and accumulates in our bodies over time, it should not be discharged to the environment. There are several legal disposal options for homeowners. Homeowners can bring spent bulbs and mercury-containing products to their town facility, if the town accepts them, or to a household hazardous waste collection event. Currently, some 60 municipal programs accept fluorescent lamps and of those, about 29 also accept mercury-containing products. Homeowners and small businesses may take up to 6 fluorescent lamps to participating TrueValue and Ace hardware stores where the lamps will be accepted and recycled at no cost to the consumer. Additionally, mercury restrictions in RSA 149-M:51 prohibit the sale of many mercury-added products in the state, including thermometers and other measuring devices, switches, relays and thermostats. The sales prohibition on measuring devices will take effect on January 1, 2008. Switches, relays and thermostats sales will be restricted as of July 1, 2008. For a more comprehensive list of common mercury-added products and recycling options, visit the N.H. Pollution Prevention Program webstie at www.des.nh.gov/nhppp/Mercury/Hgproducts.asp. For a list of household hazardous waste collection events and options for proper product recycling, go to www.des.nh.gov/HHW/. For more information, contact Paul Lockwood at (603) 271-2956 or paul.lockwood@des.nh.gov. Posted March 2008 |
